plastic magnetic contact  is a security device that detects the opening and closing of a door or window. It consists of two parts: a magnet and a reed switch housed in a plastic casing. When the door is closed, the magnet is aligned with the switch, closing the circuit and indicating a secure state; when the door opens, the magnet moves away, opening the circuit and triggering an alarm or other action.

Description

plastic magnetic contact

operation:

When the door or window is closed, the magnet and the reed switch are in close proximity (within the specified gap distance), and the magnetic field keeps the switch contacts in a specific state (either normally closed (NC) or normally open (NO), depending on the configuration). When the door or window opens, the magnet moves away, disrupting the magnetic field and causing the switch contacts to change state. This change in state sends a low-voltage signal to a connected control panel, which can then trigger an alarm, notification, or other action.

how it works

  • Components: A plastic magnetic contact  set includes a magnet and a reed switch. Both are typically enclosed in a durable plastic (like ABS) casing.
  • Installation: The switch is mounted on the frame, and the magnet is mounted on the door or window itself, so they are very close together when the door is shut.
  • Operation:
    • Closed: When the door is closed, the magnet’s field keeps the reed switch’s contacts closed.
    • Open: When the door opens, the magnet is pulled away, the magnetic field is broken, and the reed switch’s contacts open.
  • Function: This change in the circuit’s status (open or closed) is detected by a connected alarm system, allowing it to monitor security or control other devices.

Common specifications

  • Operating principle: The sensor consists of a reed switch and a separate magnet, both housed in ABS plastic. The switch contacts change state (open or close) based on the proximity of the magnet.
  • Wiring: Wired versions connect via low-voltage cabling, often 22–24 AWG, to the alarm system’s control panel.
  • Power requirements: Wired contacts are powered by the alarm system and have low power consumption.
  • Contact type: Normally Closed (NC) is the most common for burglar alarms, as it will trigger an alert if the wiring is cut. Some contacts offer both NC and Normally Open (NO) options

Applications

  • Security: Primarily used in alarm systems to detect unauthorized entry through doors, windows, and other access points.
  • Access control: Can be used to monitor the status of doors in various facilities for security or other automated purposes.
  • Home automation: Can trigger other actions in a smart home system when a door or window is opened or closed, such as turning on lights or adjusting a thermostat.
