The Essential Guide to Electric Fence Strainer Posts: Purpose & Function
Electric fence strainer posts are the backbone of any high-security perimeter. Without a high-quality strainer assembly, your fence wires will eventually sag, triggering false alarms or allowing intruders to bypass the system.
Why are Strainer Posts Important?
1. Superior Tension & Structural Support
The primary purpose of a strainer post is to bear the full tension of the fence wires. By keeping the wires taut, these posts prevent the fence from becoming slack and ineffective over time.
2. Reliable Anchor Points
Strainer posts serve as the main anchors for your security system. They provide a solid foundation at the start and end of every fence line, ensuring that tension is applied evenly and wires remain securely fastened.
3. Stable Gate Support
A sagging gate is a major security risk. Strainer posts provide the necessary stability to support gates within the fence line, ensuring they swing correctly and remain aligned with the rest of the perimeter.
Common Types of Strainer Post Assemblies
When installing a professional electric fence in Kenya, we typically use two main assembly types:
- Conventional Post and Wire Assembly: This is the industry standard. It uses a heavy-duty strainer post reinforced by a stay foot, breast block, and foot to resist the intense pull of the wires.
- Box Stay Assembly: This method uses two posts for maximum durability. A smaller end post is supported by a horizontal stay that presses against a second post. A twisted wire loop then locks the two together, effectively transferring the strain.
Key Features of High-Quality Strainer Posts
To ensure long-term perimeter security, a strainer post must possess these three features:
- Maximum Strength: Posts must be sturdy enough to withstand constant high-tension loads without bending.
- Strategic Placement: They are essential at the beginning and end of every fence run, as well as at every corner or change in direction.
- Reinforced Support: We use additional components like stays and breast blocks to anchor the post deep into the ground, preventing any movement once the wires are tightened.
